Lebanese meat pies are tasty little morsels and absolute heaven.  They can be served as an appetizer or a main meal with a refreshing salad, like tabbouleh. They can also be stuffed with different kinds of meat, lamb or beef, or even made vegetarian by substituting the meat with potatoes. The possibilities are endless! 

This Lebanese meat pies recipe is a time saver since we use Puff Pastry, instead of making our own dough, making this a good option for a weeknight dinner.


  • 1 pkg of Puff Pastry
  • 1 lb. of ground beef
  • 1 tbsp. ghee
  • ½ tsp sesame oil
  • ½ onion, finely diced
  • ½ cup green peas
  • ¼ cup olives, diced
  • ¼ cup pine nuts
  • 1 tbsp. parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp sumac
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup sparkling water

Step 1: Take the puff pastry package out of the freezer and let it thaw on the counter top while preparing the meat filling.

Step 2:  Pre-heat the oven to 425 degrees.

Step 3: Warm a large skillet over medium-high heat and brown the pine nuts. Once the pine nuts are golden browned remove nuts from the skillet and add ghee and sesame oil.

TIP: Be careful not to burn the nuts, they quickly go from golden brown to burned.

Step 4: Add the ghee and sesame oil to the skillet. Once warm enough, add the onions and cook for about 8 minutes, until nice and translucent.

Step 5: Add the ground beef and break it into tiny pieces until the meat is browned, about 10 minutes.

VEGETARIAN TIP: If you want to make this a vegetarian dish, you can boil 2 large potatoes, cut them into tiny little squares and add them in this step instead of beef.

Step 6: Add the green peas, olives, parsley and all the spices. Mix well and let simmer together for 5 minutes. When done turn off the heat, add pine nuts, mix once again, and let the filling cool.

Step 7: Lay out the puff pastry dough and roll it out a little bit with a rolling pin. Mix the egg and sparkling water in a small bowl and spread it over the dough with a brush. Cut the dough into 9 equal, or close to equal as possible, square pieces.

TIP: Puff Pastry comes with 2 dough sheets and you will need to repeat Step 7.

Step 8: Place a spoonful of meat filling into the center of each square and fold the dough over into triangles.

Step 9: Place the filled triangles on a greased baking sheet, spread more of the egg and sparkling water mixture over the top of each triangle, and bake for about 20 minutes, until the top is golden brown.

Step 10: Serve with plain yogurt or sour cream, hot sauce and a refreshing mixed salad.
