Last updated Jan 10, 2024

Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak in Durmitor National Park and Montenegro overall. Sitting at 2,523 meters (8,278 ft.), Bobotov Kuk is not an easy hike, however, the views during the hike and from the peak are worth the effort it takes to summit this mountain. It is definitely one of the best things to do in Montenegro.

Bobotov Kuk hike can be done in three different ways that I will cover in detail in this post. Depending on the chosen option it can take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours and range from 6.5 miles to 14 miles. All the options offer breathtaking views.

This was our first time in Montenegro, and we really did not know what to expect on this hike. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful day hikes. It has everything green pastures with wildflowers, alpine lakes, limestone peaks (Dolomite look-alikes) and endless views.

General Information About the Bobotov Kuk Hike

Entrance to the park is €5. When we started from Sedlo, a guy in a personal vehicle waved us down to pay the entrance fee. From Zabljak, there is an official park entry booth.

PRO TIP: Sedlo means Saddle and there is a part of the mountain that looks like a saddle.

The trail was fairly well marked with red dots on the rocks, but we also downloaded the trail on the Garmin watch and had no issues following it. The condition of the trail from Sedlo to Bobotov Kuk was very good and well-traveled, from Bobotov Kuk to Zabljak it was a different story. Much less traveled path, all mostly downhill with loose scree – killer for the knees.

Starting from Sedlo, there are no facilities or water filling stations, and we did not come across any until we made it back to Zabljak. Bring enough water and food with you.

Mountains are unpredictable, Durmitor more so than others, bring waterproof gear with you. I forgot my rain jacket and backpack’s rain cover, and every time clouds rolled in, I freaked out worried that I would get soaked. Luckily, that did not happen.

Hiking poles were extremely helpful going downhill. Our knees were screaming by the time we finished even with the poles.

We did Option 2 of this hike, the best of both worlds, and I consider it a strenuous hike. For this option, you also need to arrange transportation to the trailhead.

Best Time to Do Bobotov Kuk Hike

The best time to hike in Durmitor National Park is July, August and September. We hiked the first week of October and had an amazing time. The air and the breeze were a little cooler but there was no precipitation even though clouds kept rolling in and out the entire day.

Option 1: Bobotov Kuk Hike In-and-out of Sedlo

Hike Length: 6.1 miles
Elevation Change: 3400 ft.
Hike Time: 6 to 8 hrs.

This is the most popular and easiest option for Bobotov Kuk, which starts and ends in Sedlo. The trailhead with a parking lot is right off the P14 road.

The hike starts off easy through the lush grasslands but don’t be fooled. There are parts of this hike that are technical and safety cables come in handy as well as hiking poles.

The beginning of hike starts off easy for a couple of hundred feet and then there is a short climb with cables that takes you to green meadows with the first view of Bobotov Kuk and other ragged peaks. The hike through the green pastures is quite enjoyable with possibly wildflowers all around you.

Once we came to a vast open area, we took a short break with the views of amazing rock formations all around us. From here the trail goes downhill to a small lake and then it’s all uphill from here over loose scree with a lot of safety cable for support.

At the top you will see the sign to summit Bobotov Kuk, Skrcko Lake Viewpoint and in which direction to go to Zabljak. The Bobotov Kuk summit is only 1 kilometer from here, but it is a tortuous path to get to it. You will be climbing on the edge of the peak. Cables are provided, but sometimes they feel more in the way than helpful.

Once on top, enjoy the view! You can see Bosnia, Serbia and Albania from here.

The way back is exactly the same.

OPTION 2: Bobotov Kuk Hike Sedlo to Zabljak

Hike Length: 9.9 miles
Elevation Change: 3400 ft. Ascent, 4900 ft. descent
Hike Time: 8 to 10 hrs.

For this option, you will need to find a way for someone to drop you off at the trailhead. The host from the apartment we were staying at was gracious enough to take us to the trailhead early in the morning. People in Montenegro are just unbelievably kind and welcoming.

We did this version of the hike, and it was brutal. From Sedlo to Bobtov Kuk is exactly as explained above. Once you complete the Bobotov Kuk summit and come down to the sign right before the final summit, you will see a sign to Zabljak – officially spray painted on the rock 😊

From the get-go, the descent is brutally steep on loose scree. Even though climbing to the summit of Bobotov Kuk can be vertigo-inducing experience, the first 500 ft of descent toward Zabljak were the most dangerous parts of the hike for me.

There are no safety cables on this side of the mountain, and the rock fall must have happened shortly before we started the hike as we did not see anything that resembled a trail or any trail markings. The hiking poles came in very handy during this initial accent.

This side of the trail was much less visited, we only passed a couple of hikers along the way and the views were not as impressive as on the Sedlo side. The end point of the hike is wherever you are staying in Zabljak and you can take a short detour to visit the Black Lake.

OPTION 3: Bobotov Kuk Hike In-and-Out of Zabljak

Hike Length: 13.7 miles (depending on where in Zabljak you start from)
Elevation Change: 4900 ft.
Hike Time: 10 to 12 hrs.

This is the hardest option for the Bobotov Kuk Hike, and I would only recommend it if you have previously done this hike from Sedlo. It would be a mistake to miss the views from the Sedlo side. The beginning of the hike is through the forested area with the option to visit Black Lake.

Once you leave the forest, the views open wide, and the hike gets more difficult. There are no safety cables on this side of the mountain so be incredibly careful with your footing. Once you see the opening between the peaks, that is the direction to hike toward before summiting Bobotov Kuk.

The last ~500 ft are brutal to hike up, and then there is still a summit to climb after that. This side of the mountain is not very well traveled, and you will probably not run into too many people on the trail.
